NAMI held it's State Conference and Awards Lunch at the RiverCentre in St. Paul, MN. Lori Hunstad and Colleen Hagg attended to present a donation check for $35,000 on behalf of The Nickel Open Fund & Soulshine Bean Bag Tournament.
The focus of our donations this year was bringing awareness and training to our local schools. Jordan Schools held QPR (Question, Pursued, Refer) training for their staff in August, held a parent Q&A in September and are coming into health classes in November. Our goal is to make sure that kids know that it's ok to not be ok and where to go if you or a friend need help. You're never alone.
Awards were presented to mental health professionals, criminal justice staff, legislators, reporters, clergy, mothers, fathers and individuals who are living with mental illness.

Once again, our generous friend, Tim Roets, donated not one but 2 Brewer for a Day package to The Nickel Open silent auction in May!
The first Brewer for a Day is Gil & Sherrie Hunstad. Earlier in September, they joined Tim at the Brewery and started their batch of "We Got This" Stout. The beer was ready for tapping at the event, which followed the NAMI Walk. Along with great beer and tasty treats, those who attended were able to participate in a silent auction and raffle drawing.
Roets donated $1 per glass and $5 per growler of beer a portion of merchandise sales to The Nickel Open.
A total of $2,646.00 was raised for NAMI.

Saturday, May 18 marked the 2nd Annual Nickel Open Golf Tournament with the addition of our new partners, the Enselein Family. With this exciting new partnership came the launch of the Soulshine Bean Bag Tournament!
The day started out on the blustery side and stayed that way, but it didn't stop the 111 Golfers and 27 Bean Bag teams from participating and making it a great day!
After the tournaments, everyone warmed up and joined banquet guests in the clubhouse to bid on a variety of wonderful auction and raffle items! Guest speaker, Sue Abderholden from NAMI Minnesota gave an informative overview of NAMI and why the work they do is so very important to so many people. Motivational Speaker, Kevin Burkhart, presented about overcoming a traumatic skydiving accident and his subsequent struggle with suicidal thoughts and how he fought to overcome the physical limitations he is currently living with.
Once again, the Nickel Open Board would like to thank, in no particular order, our families and friends, the generous people who sponsor and donate to the event, our volunteer base, The Ridges at Sand Creek Golf Course and everyone who participated in the tournaments!

Following the NAMI Walk, the Nickel Open and Soulshine hosted a beer release party at Roet's Brewery! A "Brewer for a Day" at Roets was a Nickel Open auction item won by Steve and Ellie Enselein.
Earlier in September, Ellie and crew brewed their batch of beer with Tim Roets. After some brainstorming sessions, it was decided to host a new fundraiser called the BearD IPA Release Party and feature silent auction and raffle items.
The beer and event were quite a success! The event, including a portion of the beer sales, raised $6,085! All of which will be going to NAMI MN!

Mark & Jo Olsen hosted another great fundraising event at Minnesota Valley Country Club, raising awareness and money for NAMI MN. Members of the Nickel Open Board participated in the golf tournament during the day, and others joined in the evening for the banquet.
During the banquet, we had the privilege of presenting the DanO with a check from the 1st Annual Nickel Open Fund Golf & Bags Tournament in the amount of $31,000! Not bad for Year One!
Mark will present this check to NAMI during their Fall Conference in November, with Nickel Board Members also in attendance.

Our mission continues to focus on directing all funds raised toward educating our youth and young adults on mental health awareness and suicide prevention.
Look forward to an official announcement in the near future!
Nickel Open Fund 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Status
The Nickel Open Board is proud to announce that we have joined forces with Steve Enselein and the Enselein family - Soulshine. Steve was a major sponsor and auction donator to the 1st Annual Nickel Open Tournament. Bruce and Steve's friendship was solidified last year when they bonded in the months following Nick's passing, when Steve also lost his son, Andy (see Andy's story under the Partner's section). This partnership just makes sense, as we are all working toward the same goal - mental health awareness and education. We are re-branding as The Nickel Open Golf & Soulshine Bags Tournament and Dinner.
We're looking forward to successful 2019 event on May 18!

Bruce and I hosted a bus trip for the dedicated volunteers who were able to join us on this very hot, sticky June day for a ride through the countryside. Our first stop was at Schram Vineyards Winery & Brewery in Waconia where the wine was sweet and the beer flowing. Some braved the humidity and played yard games while others (like me) took full advantage of the cool indoor temperatures. Next stop - Floyd's in Victoria. The Bouncer was a lovely gentleman. Once we wormed our way past him, we took over the top deck and continued the revelry. When the sun went down, it was time to groove on over to our last stops in Carver - Harvey's & Lisa's. And boy, did they not disappoint! The nightcap was a bonfire out by the Niki Hut.
A BIG THANK YOU TO Jeff & Kathy Lundy for feeding us with the party sub, Jake Hooper for the Jungle Juice and to everyone who brought snacks!
The 1st Annual Nickel Open was a success because of you!
